Self-Publisher Interview with

MT Hart

1.  What can you tell me about your experience as a writer?

I have been a writer for years, since grade school. My first book was written before the internet, if that helps. That was when you had to put your manuscript in an envelope, mail it, and wait and wait and wait some more!

2.  What made you decide to write a book?

I just started writing one day and it came to fruition. Then came book 2, book 3, and more. Now I have so many ideas in my head that I cannot keep up! After 9 novels, 4 anthologies, and 8 children’s books, well, how can I stop now?

3.  What circumstances brought you to the decision to self-publish your book?

The waiting. The researching. The “no multiple submissions” (send it to one place, wait, if you don’t hear back then what)... Yes, that is it.

4.  What has your experience as a self-publisher been like?

Writing is wonderful, editing not so much, and of course promoting is the worst!

5.  How do you respond to the negative stigma attached to self-publishing and self-published books?

I don’t.

6.  What is one very important lesson you have learned as a self-publisher so far?

Just write, even if you don’t make a lot of money. It is dying to get out of you, so write it!

7.  What do you know now about self-publishing that you wish you knew at the beginning?

I wish I had known about the scam artists that are everywhere. Beware!

8.  A lot of authors of self-published books have reservations about promoting and marketing their book. Some even feel that it is a form of vanity or self-importance. What is your opinion about this?

ABP = Always Be Promoting. If it was worth writing, it is worth talking about and promoting.

9.  How do you promote your books and what form of book promotion has worked the best for you?

I have my own promotion company. I use that to promote my books as well as promote others.

10.     What are some other important things you have learned as a self-publisher?

I have learned more than I ever wanted to know. I make banners, book covers, profiles, and more. You have to get your name out there. Even if you put a book on Amazon, no one will know about it unless you promote the heck out of it! And even then it is hard.

11.     Do you feel that self-publishing is a viable choice for other authors?

Yes, but I also feel there are some people who publish things and they really have no business doing so. Not everyone can finish a book and put it out there in a readily readable format. It is harder than one might think.

12.     How do you feel that self-publishing their books has helped many unknown authors finally get the recognition their books deserve?

Absolutely. There are so many talented people out there and the traditional publishing industry just doesn’t acknowledge this.
