Author Interview with Justin Boote
1. When did you start writing?
About 12 years ago, I first started writing my first short stories, then a year later I joined a private online writer’s forum when I decided I wanted to take it more seriously.
2. What was your journey towards becoming an author like?
As I mentioned above, joining the writer’s forum was a big help. I had no idea about structure, POV, nothing, so having folks that knew more than me and were willing to help was crucial! Then, after I’d written a few stories, I figured I might as well try and publish them, so started submitting on anthologies and got my first acceptance about 3 months later, which obviously provided a lot of confidence too!
3. What can you tell me about your latest book? (Feel free to include an excerpt.)
The latest book, published on October 12th, is a collaboration with a fellow author, Lesley Camphouse and is an extreme horror book, The Pumpkin Club. We decided to do it as an advent book where we try and read just one chapter a day, starting October 1st-in 2 weeks time from writing this!
4. What sort of methods do you use for book promotion?
Social media mainly. I did run Facebook ads for a time for my best-selling series, which worked good enough to allow me to go full-time as an author, but as with most things, it all changed, ads stopped working as well, so now it’s mainly social media and occasionally ads on Bookbub.
5. Where do you get your ideas for stories?
Anywhere and everywhere! Sometimes they just pop into my head or while watching true crime or supernatural documentaries on YouTube.
6. What are you working on right now?
I’m now finishing up an origins story for my demon series, The Demons Among Us, then plan to work on book 9 of my Monsters series.
7. Any advice for other authors?
When you start out, you’ll have tons of ideas. Try and finish those you start before moving on to another apparently more exciting project. Don’t compare yourself to other authors, famous or indies, focus on your journey not others.
